Glenfarg Oil Buying Syndicate (GOBS)

The Glenfarg Oil Buying Syndicate (GOBS) was set up by Dave and Kate Arnold in May 2011 with the aim of reducing the cost of heating oil to the residents of Glenfarg, Duncrievie, Drunzie and the surrounding area by combining individual orders into one bulk purchase and thereby obtaining a lower price per litre.  It also means there are fewer tankers coming into the village(s) so there is less congestion and pollution.

The Syndicate has grown steadily since its inception and now has 204 members (January 2017).  It orders fuel 6 times a year usually in January, March, May, July, September and November.  The exact dates are adjusted to take account of the weather, school holidays, etc.

Between July 2011 and November 2016 there were 25 GOBS bulk buys entailing over 1,700 individual deliveries to members and the ordering of over 1,300,000 litres of oil.

Savings vary from household to household but most members are typically saving somewhere between £35 and £100 per delivery by buying through GOBS.

There is no joining fee or annual subscription i.e., membership is free.  Ordering is simple and there is no commitment to participate in any or every combined order.

In January 2017 Dave and Kate stepped down from running GOBS.  The new organiser is Tom McAulay.
