The Pewter Chalice

The picture above is one of the old pewter Communion Cups from Arngask Church. Somewhat battered, it sat up on the window ledge next to the Cross. It is one of three, it is supposed that there were four, although the whereabouts of the forth is unknown. It is part of a Communion Set where each item is engraved "Arngask Church 1807". Its presence in Church is one of those strange coincidences that crop up from time to time.

Some years ago there were just two of the Cups in the Church. The minister, Rev. Ken Anderson, had a friend in Liverpool. This friend in Liverpool had another friend in America, who was on a touring holiday in the Blue Mountains. It was lunch time so he and his wife decided to stop at a roadside Diner for a bite to eat. While there an old bag-lady shuffled in with a bag full of bric-a-brac. She went round the tables trying to see if she could sell any of her load. Our diner picked out the Cup, our Cup, bent and battered as you can see. He saw the name "Arngask Church" on it and remembered his Liverpool friend who had mentioned a friend of his was a minister in Scotland and the name of his church was "Arngask". He bought the Cup for a few dollars and following discussion with his Liverpool friend it was shipped back to take its rightful place in the church. It is now held as an item of Glenfarg historry in the Arngask Archive Centre.
